Building Retaining Walls That Last in Pennsylvania Soil
A retaining wall that fails is an expensive disaster. Yet every year across the Lehigh Valley, bowing, leaning, and collapsed walls appear that were built just a few years prior.
Most homeowners assume retaining walls are just stacked blocks. The reality is that a retaining wall is a serious engineering project disguised as landscaping. The visible face of the wall is only half the battle. What happens behind and beneath the wall determines whether it survives.
Hydrostatic Pressure: The Primary Threat
The number one reason retaining walls fail in Pennsylvania is water. Dense, clay-heavy soil holds onto moisture like a sponge. When it rains, water builds up behind the wall, creating immense weight known as hydrostatic pressure. If that water has nowhere to go, it will eventually push the wall over.
The countermeasure is a comprehensive drainage system behind the wall. This includes backfilling with clean, crushed stone (not dirt) and installing a perforated drain pipe at the base of the wall to channel water away.
The Foundation is Everything
A wall is only as strong as what it sits on. A structural retaining wall cannot be built directly on topsoil.
A deep base trench filled with modified aggregate, compacted with heavy machinery in layers, creates an unyielding foundation that resists settling and frost heave. The first course of blocks is then buried below grade, locking the entire structure into the earth.
Materials That Endure
While timber walls were popular in the 1980s, they inevitably rot. High-strength segmental retaining wall (SRW) blocks are the modern standard. These interlocking concrete units are engineered to hold back thousands of pounds of earth and come in a variety of textures and colors that mimic natural stone.
